Gates in Oakland
Walk gates, double swing drive gates and sliding gates, in wood, steel, aluminum or vinyl, manual or with an opener.
What kinds of gates do we install?
- Walk gates for side yards and front paths, with a latch that can take a lock.
- Double swing drive gates for driveways with room for both leaves to open.
- Sliding gates for short or sloped driveways where a swing gate will not clear.
- Pool gates that self-close and self-latch, opening away from the pool.
How big can a gate be in Oakland?
As of November 2026, the City of Oakland's fence permit page lists residential gates up to 10 feet tall and 10 feet wide. A gate in a front yard still has to fit the front-yard rules, and nothing can swing or sit in the public right-of-way.

Do I need a permit for a gate opener?
Yes. The city page says powered gate operators need a separate electrical permit. Oakland's building code exemptions also only cover gates and fences without automatic openers. We include the opener permit in the estimate when you want one.
Why do gates sag, and how do we stop it?
A gate hangs off one post, so the post and frame do the work. We use heavier hinge posts set deeper in concrete, a rigid frame with a diagonal brace or steel frame, and hinges rated for the weight. Hillside driveways often need a sliding gate or a raised swing so the gate clears the grade.
