It depends on what the fence is for. For backyard privacy, wood or vinyl at 6 feet is the usual answer. For a front yard, an open iron, aluminum or picket fence fits the city's height and transparency rules best. For a side passage or a lot, chain link costs the least. If there is a pool, the barrier rules decide the design.
