Why choose vinyl?
Vinyl does not rot, splinter or need paint. In Oakland's damp winters, that is the main reason people pick it over wood. It costs more per foot at the start, so it pays off over time rather than on day one.
What vinyl styles are there?
- Solid privacy panels for backyards, usually 6 feet.
- Semi-privacy and lattice tops for more light.
- Picket for front yards and garden borders.
- Post-and-rail for an open line along a driveway or a larger lot.

What makes a vinyl fence last?
The posts. We set posts in concrete and add aluminum stiffeners in gate posts and long runs, so gates do not drop and panels stay straight. Thicker rails also resist the wind better on exposed hillside lots.
Does vinyl follow the same height rules?
Yes. The material does not change Oakland's limits. A solid vinyl panel in a front yard runs into the city's transparency rule above 3.5 feet, so front-yard vinyl is usually a picket or rail style. See height limits.
