As of November 2026, national cost guides put most installed fences between about $8 and $55 per linear foot, depending on material, with typical projects around $2,000 to $5,000. We did not find a reliable, dated Oakland-only figure. Bay Area labor, slope, access and permits often push local quotes toward the higher end, so a measured written estimate is the real number.

What changes the price on an Oakland lot?
- Slope. Stepped or racked sections in the hills take more posts and labor than a level run.
- Access. If materials have to go through a narrow side yard or up stairs, labor goes up.
- Removal. Tearing out and hauling an old fence is extra. Inch Calculator lists removal at about $350 to $600.
- Gates. Inch Calculator puts basic gates at about $400 to $2,000 each, and driveway or security gates at about $2,000 to $12,000.
- Permits and review. A front fence over 3.5 feet goes through zoning approval, which adds fees and time. See permits.

Do I split the cost with my neighbor?
Possibly. California Civil Code section 841 presumes adjoining owners share equally in the reasonable cost of building and maintaining a boundary fence, with written notice to the neighbor ahead of time, unless they agree otherwise in writing.
How do I get a firm price?
Know roughly how many feet you want fenced, the height, how many gates and whether an old fence is coming out. Then get an itemized written estimate that lists each of those lines.
