Iron and aluminum fences in Oakland

Open picket fences in steel, wrought iron or powder-coated aluminum, for front yards, entry stairs and pool areas.

Why do metal pickets suit Oakland front yards?

Because they are open. As of November 2026, the city's fence permit page asks front-yard fences taller than 3.5 feet to be at least 60 percent transparent and set back from the sidewalk, and caps them at 6 feet. A picket fence with narrow bars is mostly air, so it can meet that rule where a solid fence cannot. Taller front fences still go through zoning approval. See height limits.

Iron, steel or aluminum?

  • Aluminum does not rust, is light, and comes powder-coated. A good choice near pools and on hillside stairs.
  • Steel is stronger and heavier, better for security and wide gates. It needs a good coating to keep rust away.
  • Wrought iron covers custom and restoration work on older homes, with scrolls and finials to match a period house.

Can a metal fence be a pool barrier?

Yes, if the spacing and height meet California's enclosure rules: at least 60 inches tall, no gap a 4-inch sphere can pass, and no footholds for small children. See pool fences.

What about gates?

Matching walk gates and drive gates are the most common add-on. The city page allows residential gates up to 10 feet tall and 10 feet wide, and a powered opener needs its own electrical permit. See gates.
