Chain link fences in Oakland
The most affordable way to close a side yard, a vacant lot, a dog run or a business yard, in galvanized or black vinyl-coated steel.
When is chain link the right choice?
When you need a secure line for the least money per foot. It is common on side passages, back lot lines, around equipment and on commercial property. It does not give privacy on its own, but slats or a planted screen can help.
Galvanized or black coated?
- Galvanized is the classic silver finish and the lowest cost.
- Black vinyl-coated fabric with black posts blends into a garden and looks less industrial, for a modest step up in price.

What height should it be?
For homes, 4 feet for pets and 5 to 6 feet for a back line are typical. On a residential front yard, the city's 3.5-foot zoning trigger and 6-foot maximum still apply, even though chain link is see-through. Commercial and industrial zones allow taller fences under their own limits; see commercial fencing.
What goes into a solid install?
Terminal posts set deeper and heavier than line posts, a top rail or tension wire, and fabric pulled tight with tension bars. A bottom tension wire keeps dogs from pushing under. Before any post hole, we get a USA North 811 ticket; see calling 811.
