What is different about fencing in Montclair?
Slope. Montclair and the rest of the Oakland hills have steep, uneven lots and winding streets. A fence there is either stepped, with level panels dropping at each post, or racked to follow the grade. Post depth, drainage and access for materials matter more than on a flat lot.
Does wildfire risk change the fence?
It can. Much of the Oakland hills is in a state-mapped high fire hazard area. A wood fence that touches the house can carry fire to it, so many hills homeowners use metal, or a metal section where the fence meets the wall. Check the City of Oakland and Oakland Fire Department guidance for your address; we can build either way.
Do retaining walls come into it?
Often. As of November 2026, the city page notes retaining walls over 3 feet need building permits. If a fence sits on or above a wall, we plan both together.
